Somebody to Lean On: Community Ties, Social Exchange, and Practical Help during the COVID-19 Pandemic

During a community-wide crisis, practical help from others in the community can allow individuals to manage variety of extraordinary household needs. In this article, we synthesize insights research on disaster resilience, social support, networks, and exchange into theoretical model factors that shape individual access beyond family. We suggest ties—local neighborhood, associational, friend relationships—are significant avenues for accessing helping behaviors are structured by exchange. test early months COVID-19 pandemic, drawing survey 4,234 Canadians Americans. find all three kinds ties significantly increase likelihood receiving giving help; there is strong, positive two-way correlation between relationships mediated exchange; need tend both receive give more than others. Our findings provide broad-based evidence importance local processes structuring times need.
